Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has slotxo arrived in
the Democratic Republic of Congo at the invitation of his counterpart Felix
Tshisekedi, the current chairperson of the African Union, the state-owned

Somali National News Agency (Sonna) reported.

It said Farmajo arrived in DR Congo's capital, Kinshasa, for a two-day official
visit and will hold talks with Mr Tshisekedi.

"The president's trip is aimed at strengthening bilateral and diplomatic
relations, discussing security on the continent as well as the eradication of
violent extremism," Sonna said.

Privately-owned Shabelle TV reported on Facebook that Mr Tshisekedi wants
to help resolve a diplomatic row between Somalia and Kenya.

Somalia severed ties with neighbouring Kenya in December, accusing it of
meddling in Somalia's internal affairs and violating its sovereignty.

Meanwhile, news website Garowe Online said Farmajo's visit to DR Congo
"is linked to lobbying for the illegal two-year extension from the AU".

It is a reference to the Somali parliament's extension of Mr Farmajo's term
in office by two years after political leaders failed to agree on a date for
elections.

The president’s four-year term expired on 8 February with no agreement
on how to choose a successor.

The extension was condemned by the AU, the European Union, and the UN.
