The United Kingdom government agreed on Tuesday (Feb 23) to allow the European Union more time to formally ratify
the post-Brexit trade deal which came into effect on Jan 1.

"We have agreed to extend the deadline for the EU to ratify the deal until Apr 30," a British spokesman said,
after Brussels requested a delay.

According to the trade agreement under which Britain completed its withdrawal from the EU single market, the EU's
ratification was supposed to be done this week.

But EU member states have requested more time to prepare legally valid translations of the treaty so it is usable in all
24 official languages of the bloc, and the European Parliament wants to examine it before voting.

It is currently in force under provisional authorisation in the EU.

Britain already ratified the agreement on Dec 30. Members of parliament approved the agreement on the same day
they received it.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government has been reluctant to allow Brussels more time.

"It is disappointing the EU has not completed its internal processes in the agreed timeframe," the British spokesperson
said, warning of uncertainty for cross-Channel businesses.

"We expect the EU to meet the new timeline."

Fiji is one of the few countries where rugby union is the main sport. There are approximately 80,000 registered players from a total population of around 950,000. One obstacle for Fiji is simply getting their rugby players to play for the Fiji v NZ Rugby online  national team, as many have contracts in Europe or with Super Rugby teams where the money is far more rewarding. The repatriated salaries of its overseas stars have become an important part of some local economies.

The tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe and rescheduled for 11 June to 11 July 2021. The competition was postponed to reduce pressure on the public services in affected countries and allow for the Euro soccer time  completion of domestic leagues that had been suspended. The tournament will still retain the name "UEFA Euro 2020".
